Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

Just a couple days ago our temperature was in the high seventies and now after a cold front we are in the forties. I don’t like this cold weather. I want yesterday back. Yesterday was better!

As I heard myself thinking this, I knew I was having a complaining spirit. Then I thought of the many times we find ourselves wanting yesterday back in so many other senses of that phrase. We remember something good about the past when we are having a hard time in our present, and wistfully wish we could go back. But that is not the answer.

The solution to what we are dealing with now cannot be resolved by wishing today was like a particular season in the past when things were going more smoothly. We will find ourselves stuck in the past, if we keep turning to the past, when we should focus on today and face tomorrow with hope.

We tend to use selective memory in regards to warm remembrances of the past. If we are honest with ourselves, our past is also filled with uncertain and tough times, just like our present is. It is probably very common and natural to look to the “good past” when we are uneasy about facing today and the uncertainty of tomorrow.

There is one good thing we can draw on from the past, and that is knowing God was with us in our yesterdays, and He is with us today, and He will be with us for all our tomorrows. Are you believing this today?

Every tomorrow is uncertain,
No matter what I’ve planned.
But God is with me—

Whatever tomorrow brings,
Of this I can always be certain.

Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."
