Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” ~John 4:13-14
There is a paved walking trail a few blocks from our house that winds like a ribbon next to a creek and the woods along its banks. A large bridge gives passage across the creek and offers a view of the gurgling, rippling waters flowing beneath. Shadowy trees rise above the steep, rock-lined banks of the stream.
During the drought of 2011, I kept checking on the creek. I dreaded the day I would peer over the side of the bridge and find the flow of water had stopped. Amazingly, despite the persistent lack of rain, the stream kept flowing all year. The water did drop to an extremely low level, but the pleasant singing of water passing under the bridge continued.
The creek reminded me of our Living Water—Jesus, the Water that never runs low. I thought about the thirst in our lives only he can quench. I thought about the satisfaction only he can bring. He is the answer to any drought in our lives; he holds the answer to all our needs. But first we must drink.
In every frustration, he comes to us with peace. He loves us and doesn’t want us to stay in an agitated and bothered state. When we place the frustration in his hands, our thirst is quenched with calmness and peace.
When we are worried, he comes to us with rest and turns our fretting into trusting. When we are lonely, he promises to never leave us. When we are uncertain, he comes to us with truth and wisdom and opens our eyes to see more clearly.
When we don’t know where to go, he invites us to follow him and trust wherever the path may lead.
When we drink of the Living Water that is Jesus, he pours all he is into us, and we are filled with him. Jesus is the Spring of Living Water and the River of Life that flows through us.
