Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12
During a busy morning I hit the pause button and stopped for a few minutes to gaze out the window as brilliant sunlight streamed over the fence spilling into the shadowy corners of the back yard, catching my attention and reminding me of a conversation I had earlier with the Lord in my prayer time.
I had been talking to Him about the dichotomy we find ourselves in when we long for Him to come back quickly, and the realization that His return may not be imminent, which means we need to be about the business of being a light in this world to draw others to salvation in Jesus Christ.
The Apostle Paul experienced the same dilemma, wanting to go home to be with the Lord, yet knowing his assignment was still enacted to preach the gospel, build the church and instruct believers.
For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. Philippians 1:21-24
The sunlight streaming into the yard stirred up all these thoughts as I considered our role as carriers of light in this world.
We struggle because this earth is not our home. Heaven is our home. But we are still earthbound. Yet His light indwells us. I want to go home, but for now my home is here on this earth with this light from heaven inside of me.
Then I experienced a deep joy in my heart as I reminded myself,
We are Light-filled pieces of heaven on this earth.
This is why we can endure the darkness of a culture descending further into the depths of ungodliness. This is why we can endure the ugly darkness that exists because our enemy still roams around seeking to destroy us.
We have overcome the darkness!
The Light of Jesus is in us,
Shines from us-
And is a shield around us.
Not to shield us from the world, instead it is so we can be in this world and thrive as pieces of heaven on this earth. This shield is a direct blessing from God. For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield. Psalm 5:12
We can be a light shining Jesus to the world He died for and we can pierce the darkness with the light of His love.
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Matthew 5:14-15
