A Willing Sacrifice

John 10:17-18
“Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”

Matthew 26:53-54
“Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?”

In reading the events of Jesus going to the cross this week I have not been able to stop thinking about the scene at His arrest, again reminding me, He chose this, it was a willing sacrifice.

When Jesus said there are more than twelve legions of angels at His disposal, He probably had to rein the angels back, possibly even reminding them that what was happening was part of a divine plan.

There was a plan
For love
For sacrifice
For grace
For salvation
For resurrection
For eternal life

Matthew 28:1-8
1 Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. 3 His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. 4 And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men. 5 But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. 7 And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.” 8 So they went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word.

And here we meet one angel - the angel at the tomb shining like lightning atop the rolled away stone to a now empty grave. The angel tells the women who came that resurrection morning, “He is not here He is risen, just like He said He would.”

Jesus fulfilled the plan
On a cross
In a tomb
Beyond the tomb

For love
For sacrifice
For grace
For salvation
For resurrection
For eternal life

For you and for me
For family, friends, neighbors
For the whole world
For God so loved the world

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
