Five Against A Hundred

Leviticus 26:8
Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight; your enemies shall fall by the sword before you.
This is what I love about reading through the Bible. God will bless you and teach you every time you read His Word. Even in Leviticus, a book filled with more laws than I can count. I don’t know how the Israelites kept up with all the laws for sacrifices, laws concerning the tabernacle, and everything from dealing with unclean diseases to observances of the Sabbath.

But, I do know that even in the middle of a wilderness experience, God wants the Israelite people and you and me to acknowledge Him as God and trust Him to work in our lives far beyond all that we can comprehend. I was reminded of that in this verse as God tells the Israelites about what is ahead for them if they follow Him as they move from the wilderness toward the Promised Land.

Five against a hundred. A hundred against ten thousand.

I like these odds. But it is about more than odds. It is a theme woven throughout the Bible.

This reminds me of David against Goliath.

This reminds me of Gideon and his small army of 300 against the Midianites.

This also reminds me of Joshua and the wall of Jericho.

This is God empowering us to overcome giants and giant sized obstacles.

God is for us and He will do what we could never do and often with our seemingly small resources. He is our resource!

I will admit that I didn’t expected to be so encouraged in this second to last chapter of Leviticus. When I read Leviticus 26:8, the message in these words jumped off the page and into my heart. I pray it encourages you. I hope it reminds you that God has more to work with than conventional methods. He has more to work with than our strength alone. In God’s strength, five can overcome a hundred and one hundred can overcome ten thousand.
