Every few years I watch a long time favorite movie of mine - Anne of Green Gables. It has been several years since I last watched it, but much to my surprise, I can still quote a great deal of the lines from my favorite scenes.
Don’t we all remember her imaginative and descriptive “lake of shining waters” - and who can ever forget Anne Shirley’s overly dramatic, but not quite humble Apology of All Apologies to Rachel Lynde, and my all-time favorite, Miss Stacey’s quote after still another Anne mishap, encouraging her that “Each day is fresh with no mistakes in it.” Did Anne’s teacher know her Bible? Did Miss Stacey already know that God’s mercies are new every morning?
Anne Shirley - with an E, surely needed to know this. I need to know it as well. Anne constantly found herself entangled in one disaster and misstep after another and she needed a fresh dose of new mercy every day. And don’t we all?
Anne Shirley had a good heart and good intentions while she continually stumbled and fumbled her way through many awkward years and yet she blossomed into a beautiful young woman. Her mistakes didn’t stop her.
I think we can all learn that our mistakes don’t have to stop us–unless we let them. I think we will learn that lesson at the hand of God's immeasurable mercy.
I am so glad I live in the grace and blessing that each new day is full of new mercy for me. I walk in mercy I never deserved and grace that is rich and free because I am a child of God.
It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
