Stand in Awe

This beautiful summer evening sunset against the backdrop of sky and church steeple stopped me in my tracks. No one else walking down 15th Street in downtown Plano seemed to notice the sight that I saw. I weaved around them and quickly tried to find the best vantage point to capture this image. I could not believe how fast that sun was setting which was not making it easy for me to take a good picture.

I finally took the best picture I could position myself for and then I put my phone away and stood still in breathless awe to watch the sunset on display before me.

I said, “Goodnight sun” as it continued to drop over the horizon and walked to the car and on the drive home I felt such joy from those few moments of gazing at a beautiful sunset by the tall church steeple.

Do you ever have those moments when your heart is just so abundantly full and overflowing because you cannot take in all the awe and wonder of our God?

Do you have those moments when you deeply breathe in all that’s around you and wonder how anyone could look at creation and not see our Creator?

I saw Him in the sunrise this morning as ribbons of violet and pink rose above housetops and golden bursts of sun followed, and the brightness soon made me look away, and I thought of the brightness of His Glory.

I saw Him in this awe-inspiring sunset and I know that by the power of His word all this world was made.

Oh, these are the moments of wonder and awe and I will not let them pass me by!

Psalm 33:8-9 Let all the earth fear the LORD; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.

Wait on the Lord

Our Christian walk of faith is often a journey of waiting, and waiting which we don't always do with much patience. Put my name at the top of the impatient list, but I am learning. Waiting is hard since obviously, we don’t know the answer. We also don't know when the answer will come. Yet, acknowledging that God holds the answer turns our waiting into trust. As a result, faith renews our strength to wait. We will need a lot of strength, because we will do a great amount of waiting on our faith journey.

Everything we do - we do by faith and that faith enables us to trust and wait, it builds our faith to believe and know that all that is left to do is wait on Him for the results. Many times, those results are a long, long time coming, and yet, day by day faith is required for the journey.

Our journey isn't necessarily about the end result, but how we endure the unknown. Will we endure when we grow discouraged? Will we trust Him to renew our strength and move us out of the place of discouragement to a place of peace and hope again? In my experience, when I call out to Him with my discouraged heart, He is always faithful to lift me up again and I can rest in knowing He is in control.

The choice to trust will help us wait. This choice will help us persevere and endure, grow and learn, it will test us and teach us, and our faith will grow deeper. A deep and strong faith is the result of steadfast waiting on the Lord.

Psalm 27:14
Wait on the LORD;
Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on the LORD!

Isaiah 40:31
But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.

Psalm 62:1, 5
1 Truly my soul silently waits for God; from Him comes my salvation.
5 My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him.

A Heart to Worship

Worship. God makes it easy. Sometimes, we make it hard. Sometimes, we make it too complicated. But it doesn't have to be. I have not yet heard a definition that I think is fully correct or fully adequate. Some things can't be described. I think worship of our Lord is one of those. Prayer would be another one that is hard to explain and define. Both are so personal. Both are essential to our walk with the Lord. Both are a privilege we should never take for granted.

Sometimes worship is made hard by distractions. God makes it easy with a simple invitation to be still and know Him and to seek Him with all our heart. Busyness gets in the way and too much activity in our lives can pull us away.

He still beckons us to be still and know Him. Out of His love for us He pursues us to draw near, and He will always be there waiting. There will always be the distractions, the busyness, the countless activities, the continual pulling us away from what our heart most needs.  The heart that draws near...will worship.

I want the quiet stillness that draws me near to You
I want the calm serenity that lets me enter in
With a heart of worship I come to You
I will accept Your invitation to be still and know You

Psalm 46:10
Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!

Jeremiah 29:13
And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
