A Lesson on Love

Ephesians 3:17-19 That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

There was a defining moment in my very young life many years ago, when God showed me how much He loves and cares for me in such a special way that from that moment forward I never doubted His deep abiding love for me. It was the day God used car trouble to teach me about His constant care and love for me.

The lesson I learned that day when my car broke down in Nashville, Tennessee in 1979 and God ran to my immediate rescue, became clearer and more significant to me with the passage of time.

There was a level at which I grasped the truth of His love for me in that defining moment, and as the years passed by - I gained an even deeper understanding and appreciation of the magnitude of what He was teaching me all those years ago.

When you believe and understand God’s love for you, it will give you a security that will prevent you from being a clingy friend, mate, parent, and it will help you avoid being co-dependent, which is very prevalent in our culture today. Our enemy, Satan, wants desperately for us to feel unloved - when the truth remains that we are the recipients of the greatest love on earth. Jesus died for us and that is an immeasurable sacrifice that should fill us with assurance of His love.

When we are alone and doubting the love of those around us, we must remember that God’s love is everlasting and never ending. His love is always there for us, and when we believe that with all of our heart, it will fill the emptiness left by the failing love of others, or sometimes a love that was never there at all, as in the case of an absent parent or parent who was incapable of love.

But when we know God loves us, His love becomes forever inscribed upon our hearts.

Romans 8:38-39
For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come,  nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

My guest post A God-Sized Love over at God-sized Dreams shares how I learned this lesson in 1979 as a young twenty one year old girl in a broken down car along the side of the highway in Nashville, Tennessee. Click on title to read.
